Winnipeg MB, Canada City Info

Long before the fur traders and the farmers had arrived, aboriginal peoples lived in the area now known as Winnipeg. The junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers (The Forks) has been a meeting place for thousands of years.      The first European to arrive in the area was Pierre Gaultier de Verennes de la Verendrye in 1733, who founded Fort Rouge at the site five years later.

While the London-based Hudson's Bay Company (which was granted a fur-trading monopoly over most of Western Canada in 1670) had furs delivered to their posts on Hudson's Bay, French-Canadian voyageurs and English-speaking 'pedlars' traveled from Canada to trade in the southern regions.

After the flood, the Manitoba economy prospered. The 50s and 60s were years of growth and expansion, with such ambitious projects as the Winnipeg Stadium, the Floodway, the Pan Am Games of 1967, and the Museum of Man and Nature.  In 1969, Manitoba elected he first NDP government, led by Ed Schreyer. A faltering economy and increased government spending led to the fall of socialism in 1977. The NDP were elected again in 1981.

In 1979, a flood struck the Red River Valley. Although not as large as the flood of 1950, only the floodway saved Winnipeg from what would have been its third destruction (after 1826 and 1950).  By the 1980s, Manitoba's economy had turned from prosperity to recession. By the 1990s, unemployment had soared and crime had followed suit. Many young people were leaving the province in search of work.

Not long after the flood of 1997, the worst since 1826, the Manitoba economy began to reverse. Even though the Winnipeg Jets had been relocated in Phoenix in 1996, the situation was improving. By 1999, Manitoba had the lowest unemployment rate in Canada. Winnipeg's future looks as bright now as it did in the 1890s, when it was the Gateway to the West.
