Washington's most famous neighborhood, known the world over for its elegance and, particularly since the Kennedy years, for its glamorous social life, got its start as a tobacco port and commercial center in the 18th century. Long before, Native Americans traded and settled here. at the confluence of the Potomac River and Rock Creek, and even in the past few years artifacts of their lives have been unearthed beneath the modern highway that runs near the waterfront. In 1950, Congress designated Georgetown an historic district, ensuring the survival of its gloriously varied architecture and unique character.
Officially founded in 1751, Georgetown was named after the British monarch George II, and flourished in the years after the Revolutionary War. George Washington hailed the town in 1790 as the premier tobacco exporter in Maryland, if not the country. The wealth of its residents-successful ship owners, merchants, and land speculators- is visible today in the magnificent homes they built above the harbor on streets such as N and Prospect, and on the heights that afforded grand views of Washington City and the Potomac. Some of them — Tudor Place, Dumbarton Oaks, Bellevue (now Dumbarton House) — are museums open to the public. But visitors who simply stroll around the Georgetown historic district, which includes more than 4000 buildings and richly varied streetscapes that have been preserved intact, can easily imagine themselves back in the Federal era and the mid-19th century.
Today, Georgetown has few African American residents. In the 1930s, government officials working for the Franklin Delano Roosevelt administration rediscovered the neighborhood and made it once again a fashionable place to live, thus driving up rents and property values. Gradually, the old close-knit, self-reliant African American community moved away, and Georgetown lost much of its diversity. Today, Georgetown is a popular place to walk, eat and shop. The C&O Canal, with its mule-drawn barges; brick-lined streets; and gardens glimpsed behind walls; all set the scene for a special experience in a place whose historic ambience is still very much alive.
