Washington DC - Dupont Circle, Washington DC City Info

Dupont Circle epitomizes Pierre L'Enfant's vision of a city of grandeur, greenness and grace. Here, three grand avenues named after original states — Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire — meet at a landscaped circle in the center of which is a large marble fountain. Designed in 1921 by Daniel Chester French and Henry Bacon, the designers of the Lincoln Memorial, the fountain replaced a statue of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis du Pont, a Civil War naval hero. The Dupont Circle neighborhood is now the most cosmopolitan in Washington, filled with ethnic restaurants, art galleries, bookstores, unusual shops, embassies, museums, offices and homes. It is a magnet for residents and visitors attracted by its lively urban lifestyle, diversity, and unique mix of architectural styles.

It is hard to believe that Dupont Circle was a rural area of fields and marsh until after the Civil War. But with the ambitious citywide improvements spearheaded by "Boss" Shepherd in the 1870s, which brought sewers, water, streetlighting, tree planting, and public transportation to the area, Dupont Circle became the preferred location for newly rich magnates from around the country to build palatial homes. Many of them, like Nevada Senator William Morris Stewart, who had made a fortune in western mining, were political figures. Others came for the winter social season, and many rich and prominent Washington families followed their lead. The area, now an historic district, is a rich tapestry of the work of America's finest 19th century architects and the fashionable building styles of the day, including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Arts and Crafts, Richardsonian Romanesque, Moorish, and Italian Renaissance.

Today, many of the great mansions on the avenues serve as embassies, clubs, cultural institutions, and museums. They include the Phillips Collection, the first museum of modern art in the country; and the Heurich mansion, built by beer baron Christian Heurich, which houses the Historical Society of Washington, DC and its exhibitions. More modest row houses along the area's side streets, many of them still residential, give the neighborhood a pleasing scale and make Dupont Circle a delightful place to visit.
