Toulouse, France City Info

Toulouse's site, on the banks of the Garonne at a ford, was settled before the Roman conquest of the region. Its name comes from a pre-Celtic word of Aquitain that evoques the river's waters and stones. The empire built at this location a large Roman city, which served as the intellectual center of the Narbonne region. Toulouse grew to be the third-largest city in Gaul. It served as capital of the Visigoths in the fifth century, then passed into the domain of the Francs and resisted Arab conquests. After Charlemagne, it was governed by counts, but its distance from the seat of power gave it a large degree of independence. From the ninth to the thirteenth centuries, Toulouse was the seat of one of the most beautiful courts of Europe, where a civilization of refinement and great influence developed.

The city was run by an assembly of elected "capitouls". The parliament, inaugurated in 1444, supervised judicial and financial matters. A rivalry developed between the members of the parliament and the capitouls that lasted until the two assemblies dissolved in the wake of the revolution.

Toulouse's recent history is above all characterized by the adventure of powered flight. Clement Adler, the first human to fly in an aircraft pulled by a motor, was born in Muret, some 20 kilometers from Toulouse. Toulouse was the base of the first regular airline taking off from French soil. The names of Latecoere, Daurat, Mermoz, and Saint-Exupery are linked to this adventure.  After the revolution, the city became rather sleepy and missed the industrial revolution of the 19th century. It was only after the First World War that Toulouse began to grow anew. Its strong economic development of recent decades is in part due to the decentralization of many ministries, such as weather, civil aviation, and CNES.
