Tarik Ibn Malik led a Muslim raid to Tarifa in 710 the year before the main Islamic raid of the Peninsula. The castle was built in the 10th century and pirates in the area were said to have extracted a fee or Tarif from sailors wanting to pass through the straits of Gibraltar. This is where Tarifa got it's name. Christians took Tarifa in 1292. During this turbulent time the requoncista hero Guzman el Bueno, occupied the castle, now named after him. The Islamic invaders tried to take the castle by kidnapping his son and threatening to kill him if he did not relinquish the castle. Guzman is said to have thrown down his own sword for the kidnappers to kill his son rather than to surrender. You can walk the ramparts of the castle for fantastic views across the straits to Africa.
If you visit during August you may be able to witness the local people re-enacting this event in the castle.
