The discovery of numerous flint tools in the county shows that man has been in Surrey for thousands of years. The Romans visited the area, establishing Pontes ("bridges") at the town now known as Staines. In more recent times, the arrival of the railway around 150 years ago stimulated the growth of industry and made Surrey an attractive choice for those looking to commute to work in London but live in more rural surroundings. The addition of further commuter train routes between the two World Wars made the county more popular still for commuters and led to the term 'Stockbroker Belt'. Because Surrey has developed from an agricultural county into a commuter one, there remain many very pleasant towns and villages and the county retains a rural character.
Boundary changes in the 1960s changed the county's shape somewhat, with Richmond, Surbiton, Wimbledon and Kingston becoming part of Greater London. At the same time, Staines, Ashford and Sunbury, part of the old county of Middlesex, were added to the north of the county, extending its boundaries north of the River Thames. The completion of the M25 in 1985 improved transport links further. Whilst convenient for London (around 30-50 mins by train from many towns), Surrey has retained large areas of green open spaces due to tight planning controls and the Green Belt.
