Strasbourg, France City Info

The origins of Strasbourg date back to the year 12 B.C. The city grew out of the Roman military camp "Argentoratum" and the neighbouring fishing and hunting village of "Strateburgum" (City of Roads) from which the city takes its name. As a crossroads of Europe, the newly born city was a traveller's stopover and frequent target of invaders from across the Rhine, but also a rich cultural centre. Strasbourg was cradle to the first known text in the old German and French languages, the famous Serment de Strasbourg that was pronounced as an oath of loyalty in 842 by two sons of Louis le Débonnaire and their followers.

Four centuries later, Gutenberg, whose memory is still honoured by Place Gutenberg, established a movable type printing-works around 1439. This invention allowed the wider circulation of texts, documents, treaties and above all copies of the New Testament.

However, during the 15th and 16th centuries Strasbourg became allied to the Protestant cause and noted for its warm reception of the reforms initiated by Calvin. The city became a Protestant stronghold during the Reformation and the source of many new texts and ideas denouncing the abuses of the Church and its representatives, acclaiming freedom from the tutelage of religion and the affirmation of principals of brotherhood and justice.

The victory of the Emperor Charles V over the Protestant League to which Strasbourg belonged, marked the start of a decline in the city's fortune.
