Stamford is a coastal town bounded on the north by Westchester County, New York; on the west by Greenwich; on the east by New Canaan and Darien, and on the south by Long Island Sound.In 1640 Andrew Ward and Robert Coe, representing a group of settlers from Wethersfield, CT purchased a large tract of land on the banks of the Rippowam River from the New Haven colony. The Indians called the area Toquam or Rippowam, but in 1642, the English settlers named it Stamford after a town in England.
