In 1640 Andrew Ward and Robert Coe, representing a group of settlers from Wethersfield, CT purchased a large tract of land on the banks of the Rippowam River from the New Haven colony. The Indians called the area Toquam or Rippowam, but in 1642, the English settlers named it Stamford after a town in England.
