Richmond upon Thames is one of the most attractive of the outer London boroughs, the only one which spans the River Thames. Its boundary extends from Hammersmith Bridge to Hampton Court, comprising areas of Barnes, Richmond, Ham, Petersham, Kew, Twickenham, Whitton, Teddington, Hampton Wick and Hampton. The area of the Borough covers 5,868.9 hectares, of which more than 5,000 acres is open space. The area also includes more than 20 miles of riverside, 1,126 listed buildings, 63 designated Conservation Areas, and approximately 230 miles of roadway, including 36 miles of metropolitan roads.
Richmond is a green and leafy town and it is surrounded by accessible open spaces. To the east and south lies Richmond Park a large area of wild heath and woodland that was first enclosed by Charles I as a hunting park. To the north lie the wide green lawns and playing fields of the Old Deer Park which run down to the River Thames, and beyond it Kew Gardens. On the west, rising above the river are the Terrace Gardens: these gardens were laid out in the 1880s and extended down to the River Thames some 40 years later; the broad gravel walk along the top is earlier and the view west towards Windsor has long been famous.
The name Richmond upon Thames is deceptive, for in reality Richmond is just one of a dozen or so different towns and villages that make up the borough. Each has its own character, each a rich variety of social and recreational facilities, including specialist shops, top-class restaurants, hotels and riverside pubs, with many of the shopping streets retaining their "old world" village character and charm.
