In 1624, The Dutch West Indian Company established a permanent trading post on the southern tip of Manhattan, and within a few years Peter Minuit had "purchased" the entire island from the Indians. Initially known as New Amsterdam, it as renamed New York City after the English conquered it in 1664. The immediate result was that New Castle lost about 5,000 citizens, or 25 percent of its total population.
