On the road to Corporate Housing Entrepreneurship
By John Demers
Let's face it; liberal-arts degrees get a bum rap. Everyone wants to know what in the world you're going to be able to do with that philosophy or history or literature degree. There's lots of material out there about why it's a great idea to major in liberal arts, as well as information on how to choose a career that maximizes your liberal-arts degree. Before you know it, you are selling furniture in a retail store trying to sort out your life.
While you always have passing thoughts of improving your lot, years can go by before you are struck with an idea that can change your life. Struck like an asteroid out of the blue and you wonder why it took so long.
It’s 110 degrees, bright and sunny with heat waves coming off of the parking lot surface and I was daydreaming, looking out the beautifully displayed front window of the finest furniture store in Phoenix, Arizona where I earned my living. Suddenly, up pulled a light blue 1970 Lincoln convertible. Keeping in mind that the Lincoln was about half the size of today’s eighteen-wheeler, I was even more impressed by the bald, six-foot driver stepping out of the car with a baby-blue suit. The only reason I remember that he was bald was because he sported a wonderful tan that was not interrupted by a hairline. He was a furniture representative from California who was there to sell his wares.
For the first time in my life the scene was impressive enough for the only response..... “I could do that, I could even learn to like that kind of life.” Although not a true entrepreneur, here was a self-starter who spent ninety percent of his time on his own, made a good living and really looked like he was doing something he enjoyed. Within a few months I found myself with a new title…furniture representative.
Many years would go by enjoying this way of life until the true entrepreneurial bug of making one hundred percent of the decisions bit me. By now I had meet several people who owned their own businesses and it seemed to challenge me when I had the opportunity to see the deep workings of the corporate housing business.
There were many years of tremendous success in the corporate housing business. During that time I met dozens of corporate housing entrepreneurs from several countries and I couldn’t help but notice they were all this man in the baby-blue suit getting out of the 1970 Lincoln convertible whether they were male or female. All honest, hard driving, hungry, energetic self-starters enjoying what they were doing.
